Recently, on a sunny Sunday, 50-odd, little bearded schnauzers decided it was the perfect day to take their owners on a picnic!

Schnauzer Picnics are a big day out for all the schnazie lovers of SE Queensland.  They are held 6 times per year – alternating between Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Many owners meet at various locations for play dates on a more regular basis, some once a week for the very social.

This particular picnic was held at the Gold Coastand is usually attended by fanciers as far away as Kingaroy, Toowoomba, Cominya, the Sunshine Coast and of course, Brisbane. Usually there are doggos from NSW, but not this time!

The owners sit in a civilised circle, eying off each other’s darlings to see who has the most bling, the best haircut and the most outrageous manners! (The dogs, not the owners)! The dogs, freed of their leads and their over-fussing parents, tear madly about, playing, sniffing butts and driving away any unsuspecting dog, who dares to think it’s a schnauzer!

It’s very hard to tell one schnauzer from the other in the melee. You only know which one’s yours when they come up periodically to check what other dogs you have been patting.

The adoring public cannot resist coming up to pay homage to the in-dogs, and said dogs sniff disdainfully because that admirer hasn’t the good taste to own a schnauzer!

Schnauzerhaus was represented by our 4 – the 2 Clinical Therapy Dogs Vestas and Clark, the Trainee Clinical Therapy Dog Bianca and the retiree and boss dog Arcadia. After hours of cavorting with new playmates, they all crashed on the drive home, the air redolent with snoring schnauzies and eye-watering farts from all the treats they’d stuffed in! Vestas had to be carried from the car, fast asleep, when we got home!

Usually there is a big sausage sizzle relished by doggos and owners brought up on the Bunnings variety, but Covid kiboshed that this time. There are grooming displays and advice free for the asking by top breeders present. Everyone’s very friendly, the dogs too. They truly do seem to know their own breed!

Many people form lasting friendships from these picnics and the dogs, well they’ll talk to anyone!
